In mountaineering, the term "leeward" refers to the side of a mountain or ridge that is sheltered from oncoming wind. On the leeward side, conditions are warmer, drier and less turbulent, making it preferable for rest stops, camps and travel during harsh weather conditions. Seeking out and understanding the leeward side is critical for route planning, safety, and managing risks.
